Novi offers two conditions to easily compile members into custom reports: Designated Member Type and Effective Member Type.

Sections in this article:

Designated Member Type

The Designated Member Type is the member type that is assigned to that specific record.

Examples:

  • The record for ABC Company was assigned to the member type Corporate Member and their membership status is Current. ABC Company's Designated Member Type is Corporate Member.

    • Patricia Smith works for ABC Company. She inherits member benefits from ABC Company. Her Designated Member Type is None.

  • The record for Big Sky Management was assigned to the member type as Management Member, and their membership status is Expired. Big Sky Management's Designated Member Type is Management Member.

    • Arjun Mahal works for Big Sky Management. He does not inherit benefits from Big Sky Management since they are Expired. His Designated Member Type is None.

  • The record for Mariela Rodriguez was assigned to the member type Individual Member and her membership status is Prospect. Mariela's Designated Member Type is Individual Member.

Effective Member Type

The Effective Member Type is the member type that effectively applies to a record.

Examples:

  • Patricia Smith works at ABC Company. The record for Patricia Smith was not assigned to a member type and defaulted to the type 'None Designated (Non-Dues Paying Member).' ABC Company is a Current Corporate Member, and Patricia inherits membership benefits because she works at ABC Company.

    • Patricia's Effective Member Type is Corporate Member. Patricia does not have a Designated Member Type since her benefits are received via her employer.

  • Arjun Mahal works at Big Sky Management. The record for Arjun Mahal was not assigned to a member type and defaulted to the type 'None Designated (Non-Dues Paying Member).' Big Sky Management was a Management Member who lapsed on membership and now has a membership status of Expired.

    • Although Arjun is not currently receiving membership benefits through his company, his Effective Member Type is Management Member. Arjun does not have a Designated Member Type since his benefits would be received via his employer.

NOTE: If the record has a Designated Member Type, its Effective Member Type will always match the Designated Member Type.

Examples:

  • The record for ABC Company was assigned member type Corporate Member and their membership status is Current. ABC Company's Designated Member Type AND Effective Member Type is Corporate Member.

  • The record for Big Sky Management was assigned a member type Management Member, and their membership status is Expired. Big Sky Management's Designated Member Type AND Effective Member Type is Management Member.

Designated & Effective: Organization Overview

  • Trade:

    • In a trade association, a person’s Designated Member Type is typically 'None,' because they inherit their membership and member type from their organization. Their inherited member type is their Effective Member Type.

    • In a trade association, a company's Designated Member Type is the member type they would join or renew with. If they have a Designated Member Type other than 'None,' it's always also their Effective Member Type.

  • Society:

    • In a society, a company's Designated Member Type is typically None, and they don't usually inherit benefits (but they could!).

      • If a company is inheriting benefits from an individual's membership, the company's Effective Member Type is its inherited member type.

      • If a company is not inheriting benefits from an individual's membership, the company does not have an Effective Member Type.

    • In a society, a person's Designated Member Type is the member type they would join or renew with. If they have a Designated Member Type other than None, the Designated Member Type is always also their Effective Member Type.

  • Hybrid:

    • In a hybrid association, a company or a person could potentially have their own Designated Member Type (that entity holds the membership itself) or they could have no Designated Member Type, just an Effective Member Type, because they inherit their membership and member type from their organization.

    • If the company or person has a Designated Member Type other than None, the Designated Member Type is always also their Effective Member Type.

    • If the company or person inherits their membership and member type from another company or person, their inherited member type is their Effective Member Type.

Designated & Effective Member Types in Custom Reports

The condition for member type names for the Member Type (Designated) in your custom reports will be: Member Type Info > Member Type (Designated) > [locate needed condition]

Use this condition to see the records that have a specific member type assigned to them.

Note: The Member Type (Designated) > Name condition replaces the former condition Member Type Info > Name.

The condition for Member Type (Effective) in your custom reports will be:

Member Type Info > Member Type (Effective) > [locate needed condition]

Use this condition to view the records with a member type that is in effect because of the record's relationship to another record that has a Designated Member Type.

Custom Report Examples

This report shows all current companies who have a Designated Member Type. Remember, records will with a Designated Member Type will have a matching Effective Member Type.

This report shows inheriting members, who in turn have an Effective Member Type but not a Designated Member Type because they are inheriting benefits.

Designated & Effective Member Types in Directories

By default, only those with Designated Member Types have banners in Novi directories. To display banners for Effective Member Type, turn on the toggle in the directory's settings.
