What is Google Analytics?

A freemium web service that Google offers to track your website's traffic and data.

How does my Novi website interact with Analytics?

During onboarding, you will be able to add your Google Analytics Tracking ID / Measurement ID to your Novi site.

To access the Google Analytics Tracking ID / Measurement ID in Novi:

  1. click the gear in the top right corner on the backend

  2. click the Association Settings link

  3. in Association Settings, go to the Analytics/Scripts tab on the left

  4. then find the Google Analytics Tracking ID / Measurement ID field

Once your website goes live, Google Analytics will start tracking user activity data. Novi does not maintain any customer Google Analytics access or maintenance: Google Analytics are the responsibility of Novi customers to use and maintain.

The ID will begin with "G-". Enter the information like this:

Important: In July 2023, Google stopped tracking UA numbers for analytics.

If your Google Measurement ID begins with UA-, you still have a Universal Analytics property and Google Analytics has stopped tracking your analytic data.

To continue tracking activity on your Novi site, a GA4 property number is needed instead of a UA.

What is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a tag management system (TMS) that allows you to quickly and easily update measurement codes and related code fragments collectively known as tags on your website or mobile app.

Typically, if you're using Google Tag Manager, you'll include your Google Analytics script as a tag directly within GTM, not Novi. In this scenario, you'll need to choose "Use Google Tag Manager" instead of "Use Google Analytics" under Association Settings > Analytics/Scripts.

The GTM Container ID will begin with "GTM-". This will automatically generate GTM scripts on your frontend pages.
